WNYL Urges Government to Take Decisive Action Against Galamsey

Accra: The Western Nzema Youth League (WNYL), a youth group, has called on the government to take decisive action against illegal mining (galamsey) activities, to safeguard the country’s natural resources for current and future generations.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Patrick Ekye Kwesie, the Leader of the WNYL, made the call in an interview, expressing concern that the galamsey menace had wreaked havoc on water bodies and forest reserves. He stated that Ghana’s natural resources are under siege and emphasized that the time for action is now.

Dr. Kwesie highlighted that despite numerous promises and discussions, the situation continued to deteriorate, posing a threat to both the environment and the livelihoods of countless citizens who depend on these resources. He pointed out the dire consequences of galamsey, noting that rivers once flowing with clean water are now polluted, thus endangering aquatic life and the health of nearby communities.

Forests, identified as vital carbon sinks and biodiversity hotspots, are being decimated, which exacerbates climate change and reduces efforts to combat its effects, Dr. Kwesie explained. He remarked that while rhetoric surrounding the issue has been plentiful, tangible action has remained elusive.

In light of these concerns, Dr. Kwesie called on President John Dramani Mahama to take a bold step and declare a State of Emergency on galamsey. He noted that such a declaration would signal a commitment to restoring the environment and protecting Ghana’s future. He also expressed his belief that declaring a State of Emergency would enable the government to mobilize resources, enforce stricter regulations, and engage communities in sustainable practices.
