Women’s economic empowerment focus of Ministry of Women’s budget

Minister of Women, Family and Children Neziha Laabidi said, during a hearing session with the Parliamentary committee of Health and Social Affairs, that the budget allocated to her department has increased by 6.8% compared to 2017 (134 million 275 thousand dinars), underlining that the strategy of the ministry aspires, by 2020, to empower women, to provide a good education for their children, to build a balanced family and to strengthen the rights of older people.

As regards the portfolio of women and family, which was allocated 10.2% of the overall budget of the Ministry, Laabidi pointed out that this amount will be devoted to the implementation of five programmes including that of the economic empowerment of women.

The goal, she said, through this programme is to reach 8,000 projects by 2020 and increase (from 28.5% currently to 35% in 2020) the participation rate of women in active life.

As for the other programmes, she said, they consist of the implementation of the national strategy for the socio-economic empowerment of rural women and the establishment of a national plan for the promotion of the family and the fight against violence and discrimination against women.
