Women’s political, economic empowerment optimum way to achieve gender equality

Women’s political and economic empowerment is the optimum way to achieve gender equality, participants in an international conference on “Women’s Role in Achieving Democratic Transition” emphasised.

The event is held on the sidelines of the General Assembly of the European Centre of the International Council of Women (ECICW) which Tunis is hosting on April 28-29.

Minister of Women, Family and Children Naziha Laabidi said two programmes were devised last year to secure women’s economic and political empowerment; she also commended the key role played by women and the National Union of Tunisian Women (UNFT) and urged civil society to mobilise to get the piece of legislation aimed to end violence against women passed as soon as possible.

President of the International Centre of Women (ICW) Jungsook Kim said Tunisia made huge steps towards full-fledged equality and women’s empowerment.

“Women’s voice is properly heard in Tunisia in comparison with other countries,” she said. Only sixteen nations across the globe are today led by women, she further indicated. “There still a long way to go to achieve gender equality in the world.”

UNFT’s Radhia Jerbi said “there can be no democracy without women’s participation and without rights.” Women are still subject to discrimination, exclusion and violence, she underscored.
