Women’s rate in media sector exceeds 50%, far below in decision-making positions

The rate of female journalists has exceeded 50% of the overall staff operating in the media sector, Executive Board member of the National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) in charge of Social Affairs Faouzia Ghiloufi said on Tuesday.

Even though they have not yet reached decision-making positions, these female journalists have achieved a qualitative leap during the past years, she noted at a press conference held by the National Union of Tunisian Women (UNFT) in Tunis.

The rate of female journalists occupying decision-making positions in the Tunisian Radio has reached 35%, she pointed out.

Taking the floor, UNFT President Radhia Jerbi highlighted the economic violence against female journalists, referring, in particular, to gender wage discrimination.

She further warned against all attempts aiming to prevent these women from reaching decision-making positions, as well as against the moral violence inflicted upon them while performing their duties “whose danger rests mainly in the difficulty of proving it.
