Speaking during a virtual meeting of the Arab Group at the UN as part of the 66th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW66), Ms. Hayar stressed that Morocco is now setting itself as an example on women’s empowerment, stressing that the 2011 Constitution enshrined the principle of equality between men and women as a fundamental human right.
In this regard, she underlined that Morocco has acquired a legal arsenal to further promote women’s rights, such as Law No. 103.13 on the fight of violence against women.
This text constitutes a revolution in the Moroccan legal arsenal, especially since it has enabled the Kingdom to have a complete framework to combat all forms of violence against women, noted the minister.
Entering into force in September 2018, this law seeks to provide legal protection to women victims of violence, through four dimensions aimed at ensuring prevention, protection, the fight against impunity and quality care.
Ms. Hayar also mentioned the “Marrakech 2020 Declaration for the fight against violence against women” launched by Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Meryem, with the aim of developing a system of care for women victims of violence.
This declaration provides for a set of commitments to combat violence against women, said the Minister, adding that a series of measures have been put in place to guarantee support for women by also allowing them to benefit awareness and training campaigns.
The official also recalled the government’s commitment to adopt a global policy, which takes into consideration the increase in the activity rate of women to more than 30% by 2026, against 20% currently.
She also mentioned the launch of a new program aimed at ensuring the economic empowerment of women.
This is a program that initially involved only 800 women in Dakhla but has been expanded to reach 36,000 women nationwide (3,000 women in each region).
The Minister also highlighted Morocco’s achievements in terms of sustainable development, stressing that the Kingdom, in line with the High Royal Instructions, is advancing with sure steps in the process of adopting renewable energies.
Morocco seeks to increase the contribution of renewable energy to the energy mix to 64.3% in 2030, she pointed out.
Morocco is represented at the CSW66 by a delegation led by Ms. Hayar, which includes representatives of the Ministry of Solidarity, Social Integration and Family, national institutions and other ministerial departments, in addition to actors from civil society.
Held in hybrid format under the theme “Achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes”, this session (14-25 March) focuses on the ways to promote gender equality through holistic and integrated actions at local and global levels, as well as on the exchange of good practices to increase women’s participation in decision-making.
