Yassine Brahim: “Tunisia can progress only by establishing a just and courageous state capable of fighting corruption”

Afek Tounes party Secretary-General Yassine Brahim considered that Tunisia “can progress only by establishing a just and courageous state capable of fighting corruption without hesitation”.

He added that the non-completion of constitutional authorities, such as the Supreme Judicial Council and the Constitutional Court, is likely to slow down the democratic transition process.

At the opening of the second congress of the party on Friday at the Tunis Convention Centre, the S-G said that the political compromise in Tunisia should be submitted to assessment and critical reading with the aim of achieving convincing results “but today the compromise has not achieved the expected objectives”.

The current development policies cannot boost the national economy against the proliferation of corruption in all state structures, he said, pointing out that corruption costs the state 4% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and national sovereignty under the influence of indebtedness.

In turn, Faouzi Abderrahman, a member of the political bureau of Afek Tounes, stressed the need to develop a clear strategy for funding political parties, believing that the current situation could make parties plagued by suspicious sources of funding.

Afek Tounes is one of the few parties that have opened their doors to young people, he said, explaining that the liberal orientation of the party is accompanied by a concern to preserve the strategic sectors and the social role of the State.

The second Afek Tounes congress was attended by Special Representative of the President of the Republic Lazhar Karoui Chebbi, Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives Mohamed Ennaceur, President of Ennahdha Movement Rached Ghannouchi, President of the Al-Bedil (Alternative) party Mehdi JomaA, as well as many MPs and members of the government.

The work of the congress will continue until next Sunday in Sousse.

Yassine Brahim and Faouzi Ben Abderrahman are candidates for the presidency of the party.
