Accra: Mr. John Bismark Ackon, the Greater Accra Regional Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), has urged young people to take an active interest in learning about legal and judicial matters to ensure they do not inadvertently break the law. This initiative is aimed at providing them with a deeper understanding of Ghana’s legal and justice delivery system, which can serve as a guide to help them stay on the right side of the law.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Ackon’s comments were made during the first edition of the Community Legal Clinic Series program, held at the Presbyterian Boy’s Senior High School, Legon. The event, which took place over the weekend, gathered key stakeholders in Ghana’s justice delivery system to educate students about legal and judicial roles. Attendees included students from various senior high schools and tertiary institutions within the La-Nkwantanang Madina Municipality.
Mr. Ackon emphasized the importance of having confidence in Ghana’s justice system, encouraging young individuals to report any instances of abuse or maltreatment to the appropriate law enforcement agencies. He highlighted that legal and judicial education is often wrongly perceived as exclusive to a select group of professionals, whereas it is essential for all citizens to be knowledgeable about the law to better navigate legal challenges.
He addressed concerns about potential political interference in CHRAJ’s work, reassuring the public of the body’s independence and constitutional guarantees that protect its freedom to perform duties without external influence. He urged the public to utilize legal and judicial processes to ensure justice is served.
Mr. Gilbert Korbla Kekeli, CEO of Kekeli Consult-Keta and organizer of the event, stressed the significance of public education and sensitization about legal and judicial matters. He stated that the platform was designed to bring justice system stakeholders closer to the public, enhancing public engagement regarding their roles and responsibilities. The initiative aims to build public confidence in the judicial process and ensure that citizens are well-informed about judicial decisions.
