Zipline Marks Milestone of 1.6 Million Drone Deliveries, Strengthens Health Logistics in Ghana

Accra: Zipline, the world’s largest autonomous logistics company, has reached a milestone of 1.6 million autonomous deliveries globally, with Ghana hosting the largest drone medical supply system in the world.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Roger S. Frimpong, Head of Business Operations at Zipline Ghana, shared this achievement during a media engagement at the Anum Distribution Centre in the Asuogyaman District. He disclosed that in just six years of operations in Ghana, Zipline had delivered over eight million individual medical products, including 70 million doses of vaccines, over 30,000 units of blood, and thousands of essential medicines to health facilities across the country.

Mr. Frimpong emphasized that Ghana hosts the world’s largest drone delivery system, stating that Zipline has been running a 24-hour operation, delivering medical supplies during the day, at night, and in emergencies. He highlighted the next step as deeper integration with the Ministry of Health to ensure seamless cooperation between trucks and drones for improved health outcomes.

He further explained that Zipline operates six distribution centres nationwide, each equipped with 20-30 drones, covering 14 out of 16 regions, including the greater part of Volta Region and 165 districts. Discussions are underway to expand coverage to underserved areas such as the Upper West and parts of the Volta region.

Mr. Yaw Adu-Gyamfi, Fulfillment Operations Lead at Zipline Anum, outlined the company’s three main contributions: timely delivery of medical supplies to over 60 hard-to-reach facilities, rapid emergency delivery of blood products from transfusion-certified centres, and daily vaccine deliveries to prevent stockouts and missed immunization opportunities.

Zipline conducts an average of 100 deliveries daily, with peaks of over 200 deliveries depending on demand. Journalists who toured the facility observed Zipline’s operations, from warehousing and packaging to drone launch and retrieval.

Dr. Harrison K. Belley, Chairman of the Volta Regional Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association, praised Zipline for its innovation and contribution to strengthening Ghana’s healthcare delivery system.
