Ahmed Souab’s Sentence Modified, Leading to His Release

Tunis: The Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeal in Tunis has modified the sentence of former lawyer and administrative judge Ahmed Souab, reducing the charge of 'threats punishable by criminal law related to a terrorist offense' to a 10-month prison term, a judicial source told TAP. The court confirmed a two-year suspended prison sentence on the second charge of 'endangering the lives of protected persons by revealing information that could identify them,' and cautioned Souab against reoffending during the legal period. According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, the appeal court also annulled the administrative supervision imposed in the original ruling while upholding the rest of the first instance judgment, which led to Souab's release. Initially, on October 31, 2025, the Criminal Chamber specializing in Terrorism Cases at the Tunis First Instance Court sentenced Souab to five years in prison. This included four years for endangering protected persons by disclosing identifying information and one year fo r threats linked to a terrorist offense, along with three years of administrative supervision. Ahmed Souab was detained on April 21, 2025, after an investigating judge at the Judicial Counter-Terrorism Division ordered his custody for investigation on multiple terrorism-related charges. This action followed a video showing Souab making a statement in front of the Bar Association on April 19, during a session related to the 'Conspiracy against State Security' case, according to judicial sources.
