Kumasi: The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has praised the leadership of the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area (GKMA) Sanitation and Water Project (SWP) for their timely delivery of essential sanitation and hygiene facilities aimed at improving institutional and household activities. The commendation was delivered by Nana Kusi Ababio, Oyokohene, during the commissioning of new toilet facilities at Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School in Kumasi. According to Ghana News Agency, the Asantehene emphasized the significance of the project in enhancing environmental sanitation, creating a conducive learning environment, and reducing absenteeism among adolescent girls in schools. The newly commissioned facilities include two 12-seater toilets, which are expected to alleviate the struggles students face in accessing proper sanitation. Nana Ababio highlighted the importance of providing access to sanitation facilities, acknowledging that while it is a right, it remains a privilege for many students who otherwise resor t to inadequate alternatives. He noted the project's inclusive design, which accommodates persons with disabilities and includes provisions such as changing rooms for menstruating girls, water supply, storage, and handwashing facilities. The need for such facilities at Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School, which has a population of over 5,000 students, was underscored by Nana Ababio. He expressed hope that the improved infrastructure would prevent communicable diseases, enhance environmental sanitation, and promote a peaceful learning environment. Mr. George Asiedu, the Coordinator of GAMA and GKMA SWP, explained that the initiative aims to prioritize water, sanitation, and hygiene in support of the government's efforts towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal Six. He noted that the project has already resulted in the construction of over 30,000 household toilets and 140 institutional toilets within Greater Kumasi, significantly enhancing infrastructure and promoting sustainable practices. Mr. Michael M ensah, the Headmaster of Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School, expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Sanitation, Water and Resources, and the World Bank for leading the project. He assured that the school would maintain the facility to ensure its intended purpose is fulfilled.
