Assembly Member Initiates Educational Support for Over 50 Peki School Children.

PEKI: Churchill Oforikumah, the Assembly Member for Peki Dzogbati in the South Dayi District of the Volta Region, has taken significant steps to support over 50 school children by providing them with uniforms and essential learning materials. This initiative, now in its tenth year, was motivated by the absence of one of his brightest students from class due to a lack of resources. According to Ghana News Agency, the Assembly Member was inspired to begin this annual donation after discovering a brilliant student's inability to attend school regularly because she could not afford necessary learning materials and had a torn school uniform. This revelation led Mr. Oforikumah to embark on a philanthropic journey to support brilliant but needy school children in the community. Mr. Oforikumah explained that the initiative started with a few students and has since expanded to cover more children in need. Over the past decade, the program has kept hundreds of students in school, allowing them to progress in their ac ademic journeys. Initially funded by Mr. Oforikumah alone, the initiative later received support from benevolent friends, enabling its expansion. As the Assembly Member, Mr. Oforikumah extended the program to include textbooks and educational materials for schools and teachers and expanded it to cover schools in Hohoe, his place of origin. This year's program assisted two communities in Peki, with teachers playing a crucial role in identifying eligible children. Parents and guardians gathered at a local Church to witness their children receiving the educational packages, expressing profound gratitude for the support. Mr. Oforikumah explained that he allocates a portion of his salary each month to fund the initiative and chairs the Social Services Committee of the District Assembly. He also supports several students at the tertiary level and hopes the beneficiaries will embrace social responsibility. In addition to educational support, Mr. Oforikumah organizes health screening exercises for girls, the disa bled, and the less privileged. He plans to formally establish the initiative as an organized entity, hoping to register it as an NGO to attract support from larger organizations and expand its reach across the District and Region. However, Mr. Oforikumah expressed disappointment over the lack of support from the Local Assembly and the Office of the Member of Parliament for the program. Reverend B.K Danku, the District Pastor of the EP Church, praised Mr. Oforikumah's spirit of giving and encouraged other well-meaning community members to support the Assembly Member's efforts.
