Tunis: A small Cabinet meeting held Monday at the Government Palace in Kasbah, chaired by Prime Minister Sara Zaafrani Zenzri, adopted significant measures to reform Tunisia's healthcare, social security, and health coverage systems. The meeting focused on the urgent need to allocate funding for the Central Pharmacy of Tunisia to ensure a steady, year-round nationwide supply of medicines. According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, the Cabinet decided to build a strategic stockpile of essential and specialised medicines, enhance transparency in the pharmaceutical system, and strengthen monitoring and inspection mechanisms. The approved measures aim to improve governance through the generalisation of digital systems to better track medicine distribution channels, ensure proper local market supply, and improve stock management. Key initiatives include reducing the time required for processing drug marketing authorisations, encouraging local production of generic medicines, and reducing dependency on imports. Th e reforms also encompass a comprehensive overhaul of the healthcare, social security, and health coverage systems. Health Minister Mustapha Ferjani provided insights into the current situation of the Central Pharmacy, while Social Affairs Minister Issam Lahmar discussed the status of social funds and proposed reforms. Prime Minister Zenzri highlighted the national priority of reforming healthcare and social protection systems to ensure continuous medicine availability and improve pharmaceutical governance. She stressed the importance of intensifying oversight, accelerating digitalisation, and strengthening the health sector's investment and export roles. Additionally, the Prime Minister emphasized reducing foreign market dependence, developing local pharmaceutical manufacturing, and positioning Tunisia in African and global markets. These reforms include updating the essential medicines list, setting a national vaccine production roadmap, and advancing digital transformation as a sustainability driver in th e pharmaceutical sector. The Prime Minister recalled a previous Cabinet meeting on September 3, 2025, which also recommended addressing medicine shortages, ensuring essential drug availability, and enhancing pharmaceutical system management through digitalisation and shorter drug approval timelines.
