Catholic University of Ghana Graduates Over 1,200, Plans Expansion with New Law Faculty

Sunyani: The Catholic University of Ghana (CUG) marked a significant milestone as it graduated 1,238 students during its 23rd congregation ceremony. The institution, which continues to expand its academic offerings, also welcomed 1,745 new students for the 2024/2025 academic year. These developments are part of CUG's ongoing efforts to enhance its educational impact and address the challenges of academic competition. According to Ghana News Agency, the graduates comprised 837 undergraduates and 399 postgraduates, reflecting the university's diverse academic programs. Speaking at the event held at the university's main campus in Fiapre, Sunyani West Municipality, Professor Daniels Obeng-Ofori, the Vice Chancellor of CUG, announced plans to establish a law faculty. The new faculty is expected to become operational in the 2025/2026 academic year, with the proposal for accreditation currently under consideration by the Judicial Council before it proceeds to the Ghana Tertiary Education Council (GTEC). Professor Obeng-Ofori also revealed that the university is developing a three-storey building at Sunyani St Mary's School to accommodate the upcoming law faculty. He emphasized the university's commitment to academic excellence and innovation, with new programs slated to begin in January 2025. These include Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) in English Education, and various PhD programs such as Educational Psychology, Administration and Strategic Leadership Education, Management, and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). Additional programs undergoing accreditation include a PhD in Public Health, PhD in Theological Studies, and MPhil and MSc in both Church Administration and Strategic Communication. The Most Reverend Mathew Kwasi Gyamfi, Catholic Bishop of the Sunyani Diocese, lauded the university's leadership and faculty for their dedication to its growth and development. Founded in May 2003 and inaugurated by former President John Agyekum Kufuor, CUG faced enrollment challenges during the 2014-2016 academic years due to increasing competition. In response, the university implemented a six-year Corporate Strategic Plan (2019-2024) to strengthen its position in higher education. The institution gained further autonomy in March 2022 with the receipt of a Presidential Charter, enabling it to award its diplomas and degrees independently. Currently, CUG comprises seven faculties and schools, including the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, the Faculty of Computing, Mathematical and Engineering Sciences, the Faculty of Education, the School of Nursing and Midwifery, the School of Public Health and Allied Sciences, the Faculty of Religions and Social Sciences, and the School of Graduate Studies.
