Cholera Death Toll in Sekondi-Takoradi Climbs to Five.


Sekondi-Takoradi: The Ghana Health Service (GHS) in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region has reported an increase in cholera-related deaths, with the toll rising to five over the past week. Dr. Pius Mensah, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Director of Health, revealed this during a media briefing on the current cholera outbreak in Sekondi. The number of suspected cases has surged from 79 to 161, comprising 105 males and 56 females. Confirmed cases have also risen from 23 to 28 since the last update on November 20, 2024.

According to Ghana News Agency, the communities of New Takoradi and Takoradi are currently experiencing the highest number of reported cases, with 31 and 25 cases respectively. Fijai has reported the least number of cases, totaling four. Other affected areas include Kansaworado, Kojokrom, Ahinkofikrom, Kweikuma, Sekondi, Diabene, and Essikado. Dr. Mensah emphasized the efforts being made by health officials since the first case was identified on November 4 to control the dis
ease’s spread. He stressed the importance of public awareness to halt transmission and urged residents to remain calm as containment efforts continue.

Dr. Mensah advised residents to follow the GHS’s cholera preventive protocols and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear. Mr. Daniel Lamptey, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Environmental Health Officer, highlighted the department’s initiatives to educate the public on maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings. His team has also conducted screenings for food vendors and educated them on hygiene practices.

Mr. Innocent Haligah, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Coordinating Director, called on the media to aid the Assembly in raising awareness about cholera prevention measures to curb the outbreak in the Metropolis.
