CNC Intensifies Campaign Against Child Marriage with Dramatic Performances in Central Region

CENTRAL REGION: The Centre for National Culture (CNC) in the Central Region has escalated its efforts to combat child marriage by incorporating drama into their educational outreach, captivating audiences across various communities with performances that blend humor and cultural dance. According to Ghana News Agency, the campaign, which has made stops from Nyanyano to Moree, features the CNC Drama Troupe executing compelling dramas that portray the severe implications of child marriage. The performances not only entertain but educate, drawing significant attention from students, community leaders, and the public. This initiative is part of the larger Ghanaians Against Child Abuse (GACA) project, supported by UNICEF and other local partners like the Ghana Police Service and Ghana Education Service. During a notable event in Abaka, the drama depicted the life of a 12-year-old girl forced into marriage, highlighting her journey from a child bride to a mother of three by age 18. Despite the grave subject matter , the troupe managed to inject humor into the performance, engaging the audience effectively. The emotional response from the viewers, especially from those who have endured similar fates, underscored the profound impact of the initiative. The campaign's effectiveness is amplified by the active participation of school children who, moved by the performances, displayed placards pledging to protect children from abuse. The message is clear: end child marriage for a brighter future. This aligns with the broader objectives outlined by Mr Ebenezer Kofi Nti, Regional Director for CNC, who emphasized the role of theater in addressing and mitigating the root causes of child marriage like gender inequality, poverty, and cultural norms. District Social Welfare Director, Miss Yvonne A Kwarah, and Deputy Director of Nursing Services, Ms Gladys Hannah Oppon, also spoke at the event, stressing the importance of community and governmental action to prevent child marriage, which they described as not only a violation of hu man rights but also a substantial hindrance to girls' personal and economic development. The campaign advocates for multifaceted strategies, including improving girls' access to education, preventing teenage pregnancies, and enforcing laws against child marriage. These efforts are supported by local leaders who encourage reporting of sexual and gender-based violence, ensuring that victims receive proper support and justice.
