CNC Launches Drama Campaign in Western Ghana to Tackle Social Issues

Shama district: The Centre for National Culture (CNC) Western Regional office has launched a Social Behavioural Change Drama Campaign in eight communities across the Western Region to address various social issues, including child marriage and teenage pregnancy. According to Ghana News Agency, the campaign, which took place in communities such as Shama, Dwomo, and Bogoso Kookooase, utilized drama as a tool to educate the public on important issues. This initiative followed a Social Behavioural Change Co-creation Workshop in Cape Coast, which proposed reviving the 'Edutainment Approach'-using drama to foster behavioural change. Apostle Dr. Ebo Kessie, the project lead, explained that the decision to use drama came from a prototype intervention developed by the Queen Mothers Group. This approach was selected due to its effectiveness in engaging community members actively, ensuring that the message was clearly understood and potentially followed by action. The dramas, performed in local dialects, tackled a ra nge of pressing social issues such as child and sexual abuse, child rights, HIV education, and the importance of hygiene. One key focus was on educating parents about the need to obtain birth certificates for their children at birth. The project, supported by UNICEF, featured 40-minute live dramatic presentations in each participating community. Collaboration with various departments such as the Department of Community Development, Social Welfare, and Ghana Health Service, ensured a comprehensive outreach that was both educational and engaging.
