Akwatia: Mr. Wonder Davor, the Head of Works Department at the Denkyembour District Assembly in the Eastern Region, has called on communities to establish watchdog committees to address the issue of unauthorized construction on waterways in the district. He announced that the assembly plans to demolish such structures to prevent flooding and related disasters as the rainy season approaches.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Davor expressed his concerns during an interview, highlighting the problem of unplanned human settlement contributing to recurring flooding. He emphasized the need for proactive measures by the assembly to prevent flooding during the rainy season. Mr. Davor urged community members to collaborate with the assembly by reporting unauthorized constructions.
He further explained that the Local Government Act empowers District Assemblies to remove structures obstructing waterways. Mr. Davor advised that only the assembly has the legal authority to demolish these properties, urging community members not to take matters into their own hands. Instead, they should report such activities to the assembly to maintain order in the community.
As the National President of the Institutions of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET, Ghana), Mr. Davor also stressed the importance of preserving wetlands for future use. He reminded developers of their obligation to acquire building permits, noting that permit application receipts should not be mistaken for actual building permits. Mr. Davor cautioned residents to obtain the necessary permits before beginning any construction projects.
