Election 2024: NDC Pledges to Cover Breast Cancer Screening Costs, Asserts Prof. Opoku-Agyemang

Accra: Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has announced that the party will cover breast cancer screening costs if elected in the 2024 elections. This initiative aims to promote early detection and ongoing treatment throughout the year, rather than limiting free screening to October, the breast cancer awareness month. According to Ghana News Agency, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the importance of regular screening rather than waiting for annual free opportunities. She expressed gratitude to those who promote free testing each October but stressed the need for government support to extend these efforts throughout the year. "We have pushed and put it in our manifesto that government must bear that cost of testing of screening because it will save more lives early," she stated during a forum organized by the Valarie Mills Memorial Breast Cancer Foundation. The event, which also featured a health walk, was held under the theme 'Early Detection Saves Lives'. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang made a significant contribution of GHS 10,000 to the foundation, urging women to overcome fears related to breast cancer and engage in regular screenings. Breast cancer remains the most prevalent cancer among women globally, affecting over 2.3 million women each year. In Ghana, the number of breast cancer cases has risen, with 5,026 instances recorded in 2022, up from 4,482 in 2020. This increase highlights the urgent need for accessible and consistent screening options. Health professionals, including Dr. Florence Dedey, a breast surgeon at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, advocate for regular mammography for women over 40 to facilitate early detection and effective treatment. Dr. Mary-Anne Dadzie emphasized the necessity of comprehensive health coverage, noting the tragic instances where patients discontinue treatment due to financial constraints. The forum also addressed the broader impacts of breast cancer, which affects patients mentally, emotionally, physically , and financially. Dr. Octavia Otoo, founder of the Valarie Mills Memorial Breast Cancer Foundation, detailed the support provided by the NGO, including reconstructive surgery and financial assistance, underscoring the comprehensive approach needed to combat this disease effectively.
