Sunyani: Mr Anthony Duah, the Bono Regional Director of the Environmental Protection Agency, on Wednesday expressed concern about emerging illegal mining activities in parts of the region, calling for concerted support to bring the situation under control.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Duah emphasized the need for the collective support of traditional authorities and local communities to combat the menace and protect the environment and water bodies from destruction. He commended Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako III, the Paramount Chief of Wenchi and President of the Wenchi Traditional Council, for his swift intervention to address the illegal mining activities in the Wenchi Municipality.
Mr Duah noted that the Wenchi Paramount Chief has set a positive example in the fight against illegal mining, urging other chiefs in the region to emulate his actions. He highlighted the necessity of concerted efforts to address illegal mining in the Banda District as well and called for collaboration between traditional authorities and local communities to counter the activities of the miners.
He stressed the significant and devastating effects of illegal mining, stating that without the support and cooperation of local communities and chiefs and queens, it would be challenging for the government to address the issue effectively.
