Germany Prioritizes Climate Change Mitigation in Bilateral Cooperation with Ghana

Accra: Germany has emphasized the fight against climate change as a central theme in its bilateral cooperation with Ghana, highlighting a new initiative to install solar power panels on significant buildings across the West African nation. According to Ghana News Agency, during the German Unity Day celebrations in Accra, German Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Daniel Krull, announced an agreement between Germany and Ghana to enhance renewable energy capacities. The initiative will focus on equipping key facilities such as hospitals and universities with solar panels. "We want to help upgrade the smartness of the energy infrastructure, to prepare it for a bigger share of renewable energy," Mr. Krull said, expressing optimism about the positive impact this would have on Ghana's energy sector and environmental footprint. The celebration, which marks the reunification of East and West Germany in 1989, also served as a platform to reaffirm Germany's commitment to supporting African nations that are disproportionately af fected by climate change despite their low carbon emissions. The event featured performances from top Ghanaian artists like Okyeame Kwame and Charles Amoah, underscoring the cultural exchange between the two nations. Mr. Krull also highlighted the broader scope of Ghanaian-German Development Cooperation, which includes promoting green energy, good governance, and job growth. He pointed out the benefits of the recently approved German Skilled Immigration Act, which has made Germany a more attractive destination for skilled workers, including those from Ghana. "We look back on a year of intensive cooperation and dialogue, including at the highest level and - at the same time - we are looking forward to taking the bilateral relations between Germany and Ghana to the next level," he stated. On his part, Ghana's Minister of Defence, Mr. Dominic Nitiwul, recognized Germany as a crucial partner in Ghana's development, particularly noting the support provided to Ghana's Armed Forces. "Some of the skills that you ha ve imparted in our Armed Forces will go a long way to help West Africa," he commented, emphasizing the strategic and peaceful benefits derived from the collaboration.
