Ghana TVET Service Hosts Workshop to Combat Gender-Based Violence Among Craft Professionals

Tamale: The Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training (Ghana TVET) Service recently organized a training workshop in Tamale, aimed at empowering master craft persons, trade association leaders, and entrepreneurs in the Northern Region with skills to tackle leadership challenges and gender-based violence issues. According to Ghana News Agency, the event, named 'Skills Upgrading Workshop', was conducted in collaboration with the Savannah Women Integrated Development Agency (SWIDA-Ghana), focusing on enhancing the capacity of participants in leadership, TVET reforms, and addressing sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Miss Humaimatu Abdul-Wahab, Northern Regional Head of Informal Apprenticeship at Ghana TVET Service, highlighted during the session that the training was essential for minimizing confrontations and controversies at workplaces. It also aimed to sensitize participants on SGBV, including awareness of reporting platforms and mechanisms. The workshop provided an opportunity for master craft persons and their apprentices to clarify their roles and responsibilities, aiming to prevent maltreatment and promote mutual respect and understanding. Miss Abdul-Wahab called for ongoing support to empower master craft persons to drive positive change in the TVET sector and to integrate SGBV awareness and prevention strategies at the workplace. Hajia Alima Sagito-Saeed, Executive Director of SWIDA-Ghana, urged the workshop participants to demonstrate professionalism, hard work, and innovative approaches in their trades. She emphasized the importance of speaking up against SGBV in the workplace to ensure that perpetrators are dealt with, thereby deterring others from such acts. The participants expressed gratitude towards the organizers for enhancing their capacity and empowering them through the workshop.
