Headline: New Horizon Special School Champions Inclusion at Annual Fun Day Games in Accra

Dateline: ACCRA: Ms. Sylvia Francois, Board Chair of New Horizon Special School, called for greater encouragement for special-needs children to showcase their talents during the school's Annual Fun Day Games in Cantonment, Accra. The event featured a variety of sports activities and brought together students from multiple institutions. According to Ghana News Agency, Ms. Francois emphasized the importance of nurturing the unique qualities of children with special needs to aid their personal development. The 2024 New Horizon Special School Annual Fun Day Games were held on the school's premises and saw participation from students of New Horizon Special School along with five other institutions. These included Autism Awareness Care and Training, Haven International, Hope Setters Autism Center, Multikids Inclusive Academy, and Woodfield Manor. The games, which featured events such as three-legged races, wheelchair races, 50 and 80-meter sprints, bottle filling, and football, were held under the theme "Let Me W in. But If I Cannot Win, Let Me Be Brave in the Attempt." This theme highlighted the spirit of bravery and participation over winning, fostering a supportive atmosphere for all the children involved. Ms. Francois stressed the positive impact of such events in promoting inclusion and belonging among children with special needs. She pointed out the importance of not isolating these children but rather integrating them with their peers to enhance their learning and social experiences. The chairperson highlighted sports as a unifying factor that not only brings children together but also boosts their confidence and social skills. Since its inception in 2000, the Annual Fun Day Games have been a platform for students with special needs to engage in sports, mirroring the opportunities available in regular schools. Over the years, the event has not only improved the physical abilities of the participants but also their self-esteem and overall well-being. New Horizon Special School, established in January 1972, co ntinues its mission to provide comprehensive day education and vocational training for individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism, aiming to maximize each child's potential and integrate them successfully into society.
