Jendouba Records 264 Candidacies for Local Elections, Noting Decrease During Extension Period

Jendouba, Tunisia – The Electoral Sub-Commission (IRIE) in Jendouba has received a total of 264 candidacies for the upcoming local elections as of 3 pm on Sunday, as reported by Sabah Mechergui, the head of the IRIE.

According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, there was a notable decrease in the number of applications during the extension period (November 2 to 6, 2023), with only one candidacy submitted on each of the five days following the main nomination period’s closure on November 1. She highlighted that the candidacies were distributed across all 95 constituencies, though unevenly among the nine delegations.

Staff at the electoral commission observed a lower rate of nominations from women and a slightly higher rate from people with disabilities. Interestingly, there was a significant number of young candidates, particularly in the constituencies of the Jendouba city delegation.

Mechergui noted that some constituencies have received only one candidate. In such cases, if no additional candidates are submitted, the sole nominee will automatically become the local council member for that district.
