Builsa North Municipality, Upper East Region, Ghana - The Lumen Mundi School for Special Children, established by the Lumen Mundi Foundation, Netherlands, is appealing for support from individuals and organizations. The school's Director, Madam Margreet Carpay, made this call to improve the welfare of children with mental or physical disabilities and to facilitate the operation of their technical skills workshop.
According to Ghana News Agency, who communicated the appeal through the Ghana News Agency during a donation event by the Anglican Diocesan Development and Relief Organisation for World Children's Day, the school is in need of various forms of assistance. Donations in the form of clothes, food, books, financial support, and even empty aluminum cans for practical lessons are crucial for the school's continued operation and the fulfillment of its mission.
The Lumen Mundi School is not only a haven for special needs children but also houses a workshop that offers training in various technical skills, including carpentry, welding, painting, and fashion design. This multifaceted approach aims to realize the potential of these children and equip them with practical skills.
Madam Carpay emphasized the potential of children with special needs, noting that with the proper care and support, they are capable of realizing their dreams and aspirations. She shared her personal journey of coming to Ghana as a volunteer with the Ghana Education Service and her dedication to the cause of special needs education. One of the school's immediate needs is establishing accommodation facilities for the children, which is currently lacking.
Mr. Amoak Asumbisa Richard Squealla, Administrator of the Lumen Mundi Foundation Ghana, highlighted the school's commitment to providing practical skills training to capable children. This initiative is aimed at ensuring that they have sustainable skills post-graduation. He acknowledged the challenges faced by these children, particularly the stigma in communities that often see them as burdens.
The workshop at Lumen Mundi School is also open to individuals interested in acquiring technical skills, with an invitation extended to the youth to leverage these opportunities for personal and professional development.
