Mahdia, Tunisia – The coastal city of Mahdia recently hosted the "Active Mobility" event, a part of the "Moving differently for better living in the city" project. This initiative, focusing on sustainable transportation, was celebrated on the Mahdia Corniche on Sunday, encouraging residents to embrace cycling and walking for environmental benefits.
According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, the head of communications at the European Association for Local Democracy, the project is 95% funded by the European Union, with a budget of £2.942 million (approximately 10.00 million dinars). The initiative spans three towns – Mahdia in Tunisia, Kairouan in Tunisia, and Strasbourg in France – and aims to foster a shift in citizens' behaviors towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly modes of transport, like walking and cycling.
The event in Mahdia included various activities such as bike rides, bicycle maintenance and repair workshops for children, and sessions on learning how to ride a bike. It also featured group games for families, emphasizing the concept of car-free mobility.
The Municipality of Mahdia is playing a significant role in this project. On October 20, it commenced the construction of two pedestrian routes in the old town. This work, which is expected to cost around 618,000 dinars and take four months to complete, is a critical step in implementing the active mobility plan in Mahdia, enhancing the city's commitment to sustainable living and environmental preservation.
