Accra: The Meena Breast Cancer Foundation (MBCF) is exploring partnerships with healthcare providers and educational institutions to integrate breast health education and form Breast Cancer Clubs into school curricula. Mr. Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng, the Executive Director of MBCF, emphasized the importance of establishing a network of volunteer healthcare professionals and community advocates to ensure sustainability. According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Kwarteng shared these initiatives at a press conference organized by the Foundation in Accra, highlighting its activities and achievements. The Foundation was established in memory of the late Mrs. Amina Oppong Kwarteng, who passed away from breast cancer on June 18, 2022. Driven by her vision, the Foundation aims to fight breast cancer through advocacy and financial support for disadvantaged patients. In response to rising breast cancer cases in Ghana, the Foundation has conducted advocacy campaigns throughout the year, beyond the traditional focus on October . Mr. Kwarteng urged the Ministry of Education to encourage school heads to establish breast cancer clubs in senior high schools nationwide, aiming to increase awareness and education about the disease. Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in Ghana, accounting for 19.5% of new cancer cases. In 2020, out of 24,009 cancer cases, breast cancer was the leading type, causing 6.9% of cancer-related deaths, with 684,996 deaths reported. Notably, 30% of cases in the country were diagnosed in women under 35 years old. The low survival rates due to late presentation and diagnosis underscore the urgent need for increased awareness. Since its inception, the Foundation has visited over 50 senior high schools, numerous religious groups, corporate institutions, and communities across Ghana, providing free breast cancer education and screening. Additionally, it supports breast cancer patients financially, covering medical tests, surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Regular counseling sessions are also organized as part of the Foundation's efforts. The Foundation is currently constructing a breast cancer health facility at Gomoa Potsin in the Central Region, the first of its kind in Ghana. Mr. Kwarteng expressed hopes for more facilities across the country, contingent on available funding. Despite these efforts, securing sponsorship for awareness campaigns and addressing numerous breast cancer cases remains a significant challenge for the MBCF.
