Wulensi: The Nanumba South District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has organized a forum to inform residents about anti-corruption measures. The event aimed to raise awareness among citizens regarding their role in promoting accountability and understanding legal protections available to combat corruption in the country.
According to Ghana News Agency, the forum was attended by 53 participants, aged between 18 and 35 years, and was funded by the European Union and the German Development Cooperation. Mr. Alidu Abukari Abdul-Razak, the Nanumba South District Coordinating Director, addressed the attendees, emphasizing that corruption is a major impediment to the country's development, hindering job creation and poverty eradication efforts.
Mr. Abdul-Razak remarked, "But for corruption, we could have enough resources to build schools, hospitals, roads, factories and provide all services needed to make life comfortable."
Key facilitators of the forum included Mr. George Konlan, the Nanumba South District Director of NCCE, and Mr. Mutaru Mohammed, Speaker of the Nanumba South Youth Parliament and Presiding Member of the District Assembly. Their presentations focused on 'Understanding the Fight Against Corruption and Role of Youth in Ensuring Anti-corruption Success.'
Mr. Konlan educated participants on Ghana's anti-corruption history, relevant legislations, and institutions, urging them to actively support efforts aimed at eradicating or reducing corruption to promote development. Mr. Mohammed highlighted how corruption deprives the youth of opportunities to improve their conditions and secure a better future.
He stated, "Therefore, young persons need to uphold virtues of integrity, morality and excellence while demanding accountability and transparency from both political and traditional leaders." He encouraged attendees to openly reject corrupt practices and report any corrupt behaviors they encounter.
Participants expressed appreciation for the forum and encouraged NCCE to organize similar events regularly to keep communities informed and engaged in the fight against corruption.
