NHIS Expands Coverage to Include Four Major Mental Health Disorders

ACCRA: Effective November 1, 2024, subscribers of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) will have access to free medical services for four specified mental health diseases at any NHIS-accredited facilities across the country. According to Ghana News Agency, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), under the leadership of Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye, announced the inclusion of Depression Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, and Schizophrenia Disorder into the NHIS coverage. The coverage will encompass outpatient services and the initial acute hospitalization stage, significantly broadening the scope of mental health services under the national insurance scheme. The NHIA emphasizes that while treatment for these mental health conditions remains free at the country's specialized mental health hospitals, including the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital, and the Pantang Psychiatric Hospital, the expansion under NHIS aims to improve accessibility and address the gaps in me ntal healthcare. This initiative is also part of a broader strategy to accelerate the delivery of Universal Health Coverage in the country. The statement from NHIA highlighted that this strategic integration of mental health services into the NHIS is a crucial step towards removing financial and geographical barriers that typically prevent people from seeking necessary mental health care. "This bold initiative ensures that mental health services, which are critical to the well-being of our population, are readily accessible to every Ghanaian," the NHIA statement explained. Additionally, the NHIS has been actively expanding its benefits package over the past year. Notable inclusions are family planning services, diagnosis and treatment of four childhood cancers-Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, Burkitt Lymphoma, Retinoblastoma, and Wilms Tumour-which collectively account for about 60 percent of all childhood cancers recorded in the scheme. Provisions for dialysis services were also added, further enhancing the comprehensive nature of the health coverage provided by NHIS.
