Tamale: Members of the Northern Regional Media Advisory Committee have embarked on a visit to several media houses in the region, aiming to familiarize themselves with the operations of these stations and encourage the exhibition of professionalism in their activities. This initiative also served as an opportunity to share the Committee’s mandate with media houses and discuss potential collaborations to improve the standards of broadcasting.
According to Ghana News Agency, the media entities visited during this initiative included Radio Justice, Asaase Radio, Fiila FM, Zaa Multimedia, Sagani TV, Radio Tamale, and Dagbon FM, alongside Radio Savannah, Diamond FM, Gbangu FM, Northern Television (NTV), and North Star FM. Sheikh Dr Tamimu Abubakar, Chairman of the Northern Regional Media Advisory Committee, addressed the media personnel, urging them to maintain caution in their reportage to avoid any excesses.
The Committee, which represents the National Media Commission (NMC) in the region, was inaugurated in S
eptember of this year. It is tasked with addressing media excesses and resolving complaints related to media infractions occurring in the Northern, North East, and Savannah Regions. Sheikh Dr Abubakar reiterated the importance of adhering to journalism ethics to ensure professionalism among media practitioners.
In light of this year’s elections, Dr Abubakar emphasized the critical role of the media in maintaining peace, urging media houses to prevent the misuse of their platforms for inciting political violence. Dr Iliasu Adam, another Committee member, highlighted the importance of regular journalist training instituted by media house owners to enhance performance.
The General Manager of Sagani TV, Mr David Ziblim, expressed appreciation for the Committee’s visit and affirmed Sagani TV’s commitment to its mandate, ensuring its platform remains professional. Alhaji Adam Cockra, CEO of NTV, mentioned the establishment of a code of conduct to ensure discipline and professionalism among staff and guests, pledg
ing that content not in the region’s or nation’s interest would not be broadcasted.
Pastor Solomon Yidana, Manager of Dagbon FM, shared challenges faced by the station concerning public backlash and the implemented measures to address these issues. Mr Eric Kwadjo Amoh, Coordinator of the Committee, encouraged media house managers to seek the Committee’s assistance when necessary, announcing forthcoming guidelines on filing cases with the Committee.
