Road Crashes Claim 1,817 Lives in Ghana in Eight Months

Accra: A total of 1,817 people have died as a result of road crashes in Ghana from January to September 2024, according to Mr. Felix Owusu, Greater Accra Regional Planning Manager at the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA). According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Owusu disclosed these figures during a training workshop aimed at increasing safety awareness among Tema commercial bus drivers. The workshop was organized by NRSA in collaboration with Hollard Insurance Ghana Limited, Jaxn Medical Diagnostics Services, and Tema Metropolitan Assembly, and sponsored by Vivo Energy Ghana. He reported that the Greater Accra Region alone witnessed 284 fatalities from 2944 crashes. Notably, human error was identified as the primary cause of over 90 percent of these incidents. Mr. Owusu emphasized that many of these accidents could have been prevented if road users, including passengers, pedestrians, and drivers, had exercised more caution. He advised drivers to maintain a two-second gap between vehicles during dry conditi ons and to extend this to four seconds in rainy weather to account for slippery roads. He also highlighted the importance of adhering to designated speed limits, which vary depending on the location-30 km/h near schools and hospitals, 50 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h outside built-up areas, and 100 km/h on motorways. Additionally, Mr. Owusu warned against distracted driving, citing mobile phone use, chemical impairment from alcohol, fatigue, depression, and anger as significant risk factors. In terms of vehicle maintenance, Mr. Owusu urged drivers to keep their vehicles in good condition to ensure safe and effective performance. He called for regular health screenings for drivers, revealing that many have underlying conditions that they are not aware of which could be dangerous while driving. Dr. Jackson Latsae from Jaxn Medical Diagnostics Services highlighted that the screenings focused on blood pressure, blood sugar, and body temperature. He stressed the importance of regular health checks and encouraged companies to offer free screenings as part of their corporate social responsibility. Ms. Agarthy Akorfu from Hollard Insurance Ghana Limited discussed the critical role of vehicle insurance in providing support in the event of an accident. She explained that the cost of insurance packages depends on the vehicle's capacity but assured that the premiums are moderate for all drivers.
