Subri Residents Benefit from Comprehensive Health Screening Programme.

Subri: Residents of Subri in the Wassa East District recently participated in a health screening initiative that identified hypertension and diabetes as prevalent health conditions in the community. The programme was organized by the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation (GFGF) in collaboration with the Rotary clubs of Tarkwa, Takoradi-Anaji, and Bogoso. According to Ghana News Agency, the event benefited over 700 residents in the Gold Fields operational area, offering free screenings for various conditions including hypertension, diabetes, skin diseases, malaria, breast cancer, and eye problems. Dr. Magdalene Bakari, Unit Manager for Health Services at Gold Fields Ghana, educated attendees on chronic illnesses and breast cancer, emphasizing the importance of regular screenings beyond the awareness month of October. Dr. Bakari expressed satisfaction with the community's response, noting the orderly conduct and strong interest in the screenings. She urged women to perform monthly self-examinations for breast cancer f ollowing their menstrual cycles, highlighting early detection as crucial for managing the disease. Addressing chronic diseases, Dr. Bakari pointed out challenges in raising awareness and acceptance, particularly due to local medication sellers promoting alternative treatments. She advised regular medical checkups and adherence to prescribed medications. The programme also addressed pediatric health, with discussions on expanding future outreach efforts to include tests for children's blood levels, as low blood levels were noted during the screenings. Mr. Abdul Razak Yakubu, Executive Secretary of the GFGF, outlined the foundation's commitment to leaving a legacy of good health in their operational communities. Their initiatives include constructing an accident and emergency centre at the Apinto Government Hospital and providing quarterly free healthcare services. The foundation invested over GHS220,000 in the programme, aiming to screen 700 individuals for general health and another 700 for breast cancer. Mr. Yakubu expressed gratitude to the Rotary Clubs for their assistance in the successful implementation of the initiative. Nathaniel Northa, President of the Rotary Club of Tarkwa, highlighted the annual nature of the screening programme and the collaboration with GFGF over the past five years. He noted the significant impact on underserved communities, providing access to quality healthcare. Dede Hamidu, President of the Rotary Club of Takoradi-Anaji, emphasized the expanded focus on breast cancer awareness, including its impact on men, and commended the community's engagement with the health screening exercise.
