Sunyani Market Women Association President Calls for Better Use of Local Government Funds

Sunyani: Nana Aboa Boahemaa, the President of the Sunyani Market Women Association, has strongly urged Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to dedicate their Internally Generated Funds (IGFs) to meaningful development projects. This initiative, she argues, will not only enhance the visibility of development but also simplify the process of revenue collection. According to Ghana News Agency, Boahemaa highlighted the frustrations of market women and traders in paying market tolls that do not correspond with visible improvements in market facilities. Her remarks came during a stakeholder engagement meeting on an adolescent project in the Sunyani West and Sunyani Municipalities, which saw participation from local government representatives, traditional authorities, and members of the Ghana Health Service, Ghana Education Service, and various civil society organizations. The engagement was part of the 'Resilient City for Adolescent Project' (RC4A), a three-year initiative spearheaded by the S unyani-based Global Media Foundation (GloMeF) with support from Fondation Bortnar. The project, which involves a collaboration with Indigenous Women Empowerment Network and Citizens Watch Ghana, aims at empowering the city's adolescents through a comprehensive 300,000-pound sterling program. During the event, Boahemaa, also serving as the Dwantoahemaa (sub-queen) of the Sunyani Traditional Area, represented Nana Akosua Asor Sika Brayie II, the Paramount Queen Mother. She emphasized the need for the Sunyani Municipal Assembly to improve conditions at key marketplaces such as the Nana Bosoma Central and Sunyani Main markets. Boahemaa assured that with visible development, traders and shop owners would be more willing to comply with fee collections, thus bolstering the Assembly's capacity to fund further development projects. The meeting also provided a platform for Mr. Raphael Godlove Ahenu, Founder and CEO of GloMeF, to discuss the broader impacts of the RC4A project. He outlined the project's goals to socia lly, politically, and economically empower adolescents in Sunyani, enabling them to become active and engaged citizens. Boahemaa praised the ongoing efforts of the involved NGOs and their partners, acknowledging the significant impact these initiatives are already having on the community's youth.
