**Tamale Schools’ Performance Under Review: Key Challenges Identified at Sagnarigu Municipal Meeting**

Tamale: A critical stakeholders' meeting recently convened in Tamale to evaluate the performance of basic schools across the Sagnarigu Municipality. This gathering aimed to scrutinize the findings from the Municipal Education Oversight Committee (MEOC) and discuss potential strategies for educational improvement. According to Ghana News Agency, the review meeting brought together about 143 primary schools' performance reports, assessed by the School Management and Support Unit Officers. The Sagnarigu Municipal Directorate of Education organized the event in collaboration with School for Life, a non-governmental organization, and with financial backing from the USAID Ghana Strengthening Accountability in Ghana's Education System (SAGES) Project. The diverse group of participants included officials from the Municipal Directorate of Education, Civil Society Organizations, community members, and representatives of the Municipal Assembly. Alhaji Andani Zakaria Abdulai, a Training Officer at the Sagnarigu Municip al Assembly, shared some critical findings during his presentation. He highlighted a significant shortage of furniture, estimating a deficit of 17,000 units as a major hurdle. Additionally, he pointed out the lack of appropriate classrooms and office space for the Municipal Education Directorate, which has been an ongoing issue since the municipality's establishment in 2012. Abdulai also shed light on other pressing issues such as overstaffing in certain schools, inadequate Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities, encroachment on school lands, and unwarranted interferences by community leaders and opinion makers. These factors have collectively contributed to a notable decline in student performance at the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) over the past two years. In response to these challenges, Abdulai advocated for a staff rationalization strategy, improved fuel supply for effective monitoring and supervision, and enhanced infrastructure to support better learning outcomes. Moreove r, Mr. Stephen Mensah, the Sagnarigu Municipal Director of Social Welfare, commended the support from USAID SAGES and School for Life. He emphasized the need for further assistance, particularly for persons with disabilities, to foster an inclusive educational environment. The meeting concluded with a unified call from participants for increased partnership and investment in the education sector of the Municipality to elevate learning outcomes for all students.
