Tarkwa: Tarkwa May Legends, an association of individuals born in May and residing in Tarkwa and its environs, has donated medical equipment worth GHS45,000 to four Community Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compounds to enhance healthcare services.

According to Ghana News Agency, the donated items include an autoclave 18 liters with timer, BMI scale with height, baby weighing scale, nebulizer machine, pulse oximeter, digital thermometer, and private screen (four folders). The beneficiary CHPS compounds are located in Bonsa, Brahabebome, Akoon, and Bonsawire, all within the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.

Presenting the equipment at the health facilities, Mrs. Mary Addison-Fynn, Chairperson of Tarkwa May Legends, highlighted that the COVID-19 pandemic's isolating effects inspired their group to take action and positively impact their community. She mentioned that their group, formed in 2021, chose to focus on health because a healthy community benefits everyone.

Mrs. Addison-Fynn also announced plans to install signboards for all CHPS compounds in the area to improve accessibility, noting their struggle to locate Bonsa CHPS compound. Additionally, she revealed plans for constructing a facility for one of the CHPS compounds next year.

Legend Madam Ivy Ama Arthur, Secretary, elaborated on the association's annual community support activities. In 2021, they sponsored an educational initiative on neonatal jaundice at Tarkwa Municipal Hospital. The following year, they provided a firefly machine to address neonatal jaundice cases. In their third year, they supported midwives at Apinto Government Hospital Maternity unit.

This year, the Tarkwa May Legends focused their efforts directly on communities, recognizing the need for resources to prevent unnecessary deaths and improve overall well-being. Madam Arthur emphasized the health challenges posed by different types of mining in Tarkwa, including illegal mining, and expressed pride in their contributions to community health.

Mrs. Wilhemina Tiwaah Duah Morttey, Municipal Director of Health Services, Tarkwa Nsuaem, expressed gratitude for the donation, noting the significant impact of the autoclave and weighing scales on healthcare services, and the critical care provided by the nebulizer in emergencies. She assured that the equipment would be well-maintained and utilized to improve health outcomes in the communities.
