Tunisia has had its 6th wettest June since 1950, with a total monthly accumulation (27 main stations) of 520 mm, while the normal for the same stations is 249 mm, said the National Meteorological Institute (French: INM).
In its climate report for the month of June, published on Thursday, the INM added that the rainfall recorded during the month reached 208.8% of the normal for the month of June.
Throughout the month, precipitation was heavy in northern Tunisia. However, there was no rainfall in the south, except in Gafsa, where the rainfall (17.3 mm) was higher than the normal for the station (3.4 mm).
In addition, June 2023 was characterised by a slight increase in temperature compared to normal, with a difference of +0.3°C, unlike June 2022, which was the hottest month ever recorded with a positive anomaly of +3.4°C.
With regard to average temperatures, the INM pointed out that they ranged from 21.2°C in Thala to 31°C in Tozeur. They were higher than the reference averages (1991-2020) in all regions except Siliana, Thala, Gafsa and El Borma.
The national average temperature (27 main stations) reached 26.1°C and exceeded the reference average (25.7°C) with a deviation of +0.3°C.
The weather was often unstable at the beginning of June 2023. Thunderstorms were frequent in most regions except the southern ones. As a result, the first half of the month was characterised by lower than normal minimum and maximum temperatures.
After the 18th of June, temperatures started to rise. By the end of the month, they were above average of the month.
