Tunisian Party Demands Clarity on Mornaguia Prison Terrorists’ Escape

Tunis, Tunisia - The Popular Current party in Tunisia is pressing for detailed information regarding the escape of five terrorists from Mornaguia prison, as stated by party spokesperson Mohsen Nabti. This demand follows the emergence of social media videos allegedly showing the arrest of some of the escapees.

According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, the Popular Current's spokesperson expressed concern over the lack of official communication about the prison break. Nabti emphasized that the secrecy surrounding the investigation should not lead to the spread of rumors and unverified information. The party is urging the authorities to provide an official account of the incident and the current status of the escaped prisoners.

Nabti criticized the government's apparent inaction in addressing the flurry of rumors and misinformation circulating online, particularly regarding the identities of those arrested. There has been specific reference to Ahmed Malki, also known as "the Somali," who is allegedly connected to the assassination of Mohamed Brahmi, a leading figure in the Popular Current. The party is awaiting an official statement from the Ministry of Interior on this arrest.

On October 31, the Ministry of the Interior announced the escape of five dangerous terrorists from Mornaguia civil prison, with two being linked to the high-profile assassinations of political figures Mohamed Brahmi and Chokri Belaid. The assassinations of Belaid in February 2013 and Brahmi in July of the same year were significant events, stirring political unrest in Tunisia. Both were outspoken critics of the Islamist movement in the country and their deaths led to widespread protests and political upheaval.

The Popular Current is advocating for transparency in this matter, while also stressing the importance of not compromising the ongoing investigation.
