Amid atrocities in Gaza, Universal Declaration of Human Rights no longer makes sense (Conference)

Amid the dreadful atrocities committed in Gaza, the deafening silence of the International Community and the West duplicity in addressing humanitarian issues, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) has become meaningless.

This is the general observation drawn up unanimously by the participants in a conference organized, Saturday, in Tunis, by the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES) in partnership with the National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) on the commemoration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The participants in the conference reiterated that the conflicts which are shaking today’s world clearly showed «a gap, a fracture between text and practice.

For them the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is nothing without «its credibility». They criticized the «double standards» policy adopted by the West in addressing two different conflicts, namely the Russian-Ukrainian war and the real genocide in Gaza. .

In the Ukrainian case, the West acts as a watchdog
over human rights, using as such many subterfuges and alarmist means to pit the international community against Russia, going so far as to its «demonization.»

However, when the situation involves Gaza and the fate of Palestinians, it is completely different. There, the West is cautious, passive, skeptical and reluctant. It often turns a blind eye on the Zionist cruelty against disarmed civilians.

Member of the Executive Council of the FTDES, Hayet Amamou, harshly criticized the impotence of Arab regimes and their inaction provide real help to Palestinian people in this tough times, citing as an example the crossing border of Rafah which has become under the control of the Zionist entity after being initially under the authority of Egypt and Palestinians.

Amamou underlined that the Palestinian cause is a humanitarian issue rather than an Arab-Muslim question, adding that what is happening in Gaza could, in the long run, strike the balance of power in the world.

Today we are witnessing an unprecedented surg
e of solidarity in the four corners of the world with the Palestinian people, she pointed out, affirming that the international public opinion can no longer tolerate this tsunami of lies shared by Western media consolidating the Israeli narrative.

Member of the executive office of the Journalists’ Union, Jihène Louati, affirmed that the Palestinian cause has experienced «new momentum» since October 7, 2023, the most significant one since the Nakba in 1948.

Massive demonstrations swept across the globe to show solidarity with the sufferings of the Palestinian people. Everyone took to the streets to condemn and say stop the «doublespeak» of both Western regimes and international organizations.
