Belgian Daily Uncovers Israel’s Attempts to Influence Legal Proceedings Against Officials

Brussels: Belgian daily Le Soir reported Monday Israel's efforts to influence the judicial course of two cases filed in Belgium against senior Israeli officials.

According to Anadolu Agency, the investigation was conducted in collaboration with the European Investigative Collaborations (EIC) consortium under the title 'Israel Files.' It was based on dozens of confidential documents leaked from within the Israeli administration.

The documents reportedly outline Israel's attempts to suppress two legal cases filed in Belgium under the nation's universal jurisdiction law. This law permits the prosecution of alleged breaches of international humanitarian law committed abroad. One of the complaints, filed in June 2010 by attorneys representing a Belgian-Palestinian doctor identified as E.O., pertained to the destruction of land in Gaza during Israel's Operation Cast Lead. This complaint targeted 14 senior Israeli figures, including former Prime Ministers Ehud Olmert and Ehud Barak, as noted by Le Soir.

A second complaint was filed by lawyer Joke Callewaert in November 2010 on behalf of four Belgian participants in a humanitarian flotilla intercepted by Israeli soldiers in an operation that resulted in nine fatalities. The report stated that former Defense Minister Ehud Barak, an Israeli general, and a vice admiral were accused of severe violations.

Le Soir indicated that the first case remains under investigation, while the second was dismissed in December 2024. The report revealed that Israel engaged in 'judicial diplomacy' with Belgian magistrates, diplomats, and political officials, including former Prime Minister Charles Michel, due to concerns regarding the cases.

Furthermore, Israeli representatives reportedly sought information on ongoing investigations through a team of Belgian lawyers led by Michele Hirsch.
