CEN-SAD: Tunisia Calls for Coordinated Action to Address Regional Challenges

Tripoli: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad Mohamed Ali Nafti pointed out that the current challenges facing the region call upon the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) member States to exert joint and coordinated efforts to revitalise the Community and activate its role in boosting cooperation, integration and development in the region. According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, speaking at the ministerial meeting held following the reopening of the permanent headquarters of the CEN-SAD Executive Secretariat on Saturday in Tripoli, Nafti stated that the erosion of trust in the multilateral system and the world's entry into a phase of aid stagnation call upon CEN-SAD member States, more than ever before, to demonstrate further solidarity, unity and collective engagement within a participatory approach underpinned by clear, effective and efficient mechanisms. In this regard, and reaffirming Tunisia's commitment to supporting the Community of Sahel-Saharan States, the FM under scored Tunisia's commitment to enhancing the organisation's role in serving peace, security and economic development across the region and the African continent, highlighting the challenges currently facing the region. Nafti called for supporting efforts for peace, dialogue, reconciliation and social justice in member States suffering conflicts and crises, and for endeavouring to settle disputes through peaceful, political, diplomatic and legal means, in accordance with the United Nations Charter, the African Union, and the principles and values upon which the Community is founded, with full respect for State sovereignty and national choices, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs press release on Sunday reads. He also recommended fostering coordination and security cooperation among member States to confront terrorist threats, organised crime and illicit trafficking, while drawing on relevant regional and international expertise and initiatives in this field. Furthermore, he urged the implementation of economic, s ocial and environmental development projects and programmes that meet the needs and aspirations of Sahelian and Saharan peoples, contribute to improving living standards, well-being and social cohesion, and advance the Sustainable Development Goals 2030. The Minister proposed reinforcing regional and continental integration among member States, facilitating the movement of intra-regional trade, services and capital, encouraging investment, tourism and cultural exchange, and leveraging available mechanisms at the African continental level, notably the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Mohamed Ali Nafti held a series of bilateral meetings with his counterparts from African countries participating in the meeting, discussing the need to adopt the set of proposals deliberated upon, alongside ways to scale up cooperation with their respective countries.
