Obuasi: Education is the fundamental tool for empowering girls and breaking societal barriers, emphasized Ms Mavis Nana Yaa Kyei, the Social Development and Gender Superintendent at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine. Her remarks were made during a durbar to mark the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child, organized by the Obuasi Municipal Girl Child Unit in collaboration with AngloGold Ashanti. According to Ghana News Agency, Ms Kyei highlighted the company's commitment to girl child education as a critical element for enabling them to compete in traditionally male-dominated fields. The event underscored the alignment of the celebration with AngloGold Ashanti's core values of diversity, equity, and inclusion, which are integrated not only within its workforce but also across its host communities. The International Day of the Girl Child, celebrated globally, focuses on elevating the profiles of girls, their voices, actions, and leadership abilities. The theme for the 2024 celebration, "Girls' Vision for the Fu ture," brought together students from basic and Senior High Schools across the Municipality. Ms Kyei outlined several initiatives by AngloGold Ashanti aimed at bolstering the girl child's capacity to achieve their aspirations. These include promoting menstrual hygiene to combat period poverty and encourage continuous schooling, as well as the Girls in Science Mentorship Programme, designed to foster interest and participation in scientific disciplines among young women. Moreover, Mrs Cecelia Mensah, the Obuasi Municipal Girls Child Coordinator, asserted that the country is progressing positively in empowering women to attain prominent roles traditionally held by men, demonstrating the effectiveness of ongoing efforts in women's empowerment. She stressed the importance of such programs for building girls' confidence and inspiring them to pursue ambitious goals.
