ACCRA: The Ghana Golf Association (GGA) recently conducted a one-day seminar for sports journalists at the Bok Nam Kim Golf Club in Burma Camp, Accra. The event aimed to equip journalists with a deeper understanding of golf, covering its terminologies, skills, and regulatory framework. According to Ghana News Agency, the seminar provided attendees with insights into the intricacies of the sport, including how it is played, course details, and challenges faced by media professionals in golf reporting. Journalists were also introduced to different types of strokes used by golfers and engaged in a question-and-answer session to address specific concerns. Mr. Kwaku Okyere, President of the GGA, emphasized the critical role of media in promoting sports, including golf, within the country. He encouraged journalists to allocate airtime and column space to golf, similar to their coverage of football. He expressed gratitude to the media for their participation and addressed the misconception that golf is a sport onl y for the wealthy, highlighting its broader appeal and values such as integrity and patience. Retired Col. John Armah Okai from the Captain Bok Nam Golf Club encouraged journalists not only to report on golf but also to participate in the sport, citing the global prominence of figures like Eldrick Tont "Tiger" Woods as examples of media impact. Mr. Maurice Quansah, Editor of Graphic Sports, shared his experiences in golf journalism and urged colleagues to increase their coverage of the sport. Meanwhile, Mr. Solomon Allotey, Secretary General of the GGA, underscored the importance of innovative, credible, and dedicated media coverage to foster golf's development in Ghana. He noted the distinction between professional and amateur golfers and highlighted upcoming competitions that would benefit from enhanced media attention, such as the Asantehene Open Golf Championship and the Accra Golf Open Championship. The GGA serves as the governing body for golf in Ghana, committed to promoting the sport's growth and excellence across the nation.
