Ghana’s Political Leaders to Commit to Business Growth and Environmental Protection at CEO Gala

Accra: The flagbearers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are set to sign a social contract with the business community, aiming to promote economic growth and tackle the illegal mining issue in Ghana. The signing will occur during the Ghana CEO Presidential Manifesto Gala Dinner on November 7, 2024, announced by Mr. Ernest De-Graft Egyir, CEO of the Chief Executives Network Ghana. According to Ghana News Agency, the event was introduced at its launch in Accra, where Mr. De-Graft Egyir highlighted its significance as a platform for dialogue and collaboration between business leaders and political figures. The Gala Dinner, themed "Reigniting the Business Economy and Social Contract for Growth: A Business Manifesto for Political Accountability and Sustainable Development," seeks to forge a renewed partnership between business and political leadership through transparency, good governance, and mutual accountability. Mr. De-Graft Egyir emphasized the importance of the soc ial contract, stating that it is a commitment to uphold principles ensuring economic growth and political accountability. He mentioned that the agreement would address the galamsey menace, a severe issue of illegal mining that has caused extensive environmental damage in Ghana. The CEO stressed the economic and ecological implications of galamsey, advocating for a robust pact to end this practice and protect the environment for future generations. The Gala will also feature presentations from former President John Mahama and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President of Ghana. Mr. Mahama will discuss past policies and future strategies for private sector growth, while Dr. Bawumia will focus on innovation, accountability, and the role of technology in enhancing economic resilience. Mr. George Ankomah, Tax Partner at Deloitte Ghana, praised the initiative and suggested making the Gala an annual event to consistently promote political accountability and support economic policies that reduce business costs and foster growth in Ghana.
