Hajj Village Development Progresses at Kotoka International Airport

Accra: Work on the multipurpose Hajj Village at Kotoka International Airport is progressing steadily as President John Dramani Mahama officially commenced the project on Friday, February 28, 2025.

According to Ghana News Agency, a statement from the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) outlined the project's significance as part of the company's efforts to enhance revenue through commercial partnerships. GACL, a state-owned self-sustaining entity, aims to generate funds internally while facilitating aircraft, passenger, cargo, and mail movement.

The Hajj Village project is part of GACL's initiative to support pilgrims during the Hajj season and cater to public needs throughout the year. The development is expected to boost GACL's non-aeronautical revenue streams by providing a range of facilities that serve both pilgrims and the general public.

The New Hajj Village is a mixed-use development near Kotoka International Airport, featuring six key facilities: residential accommodation, a clinic, a terminal, conference spaces, recreational areas, and offices. These amenities are designed to support the annual Hajj pilgrimage and provide year-round services to the broader community.

Upon completion, the New Hajj Village will offer a world-class experience for pilgrims and the community, providing a dignified and conducive environment and serving as a one-stop destination for Hajj-related activities. The project includes commercial facilities such as a conference center and sports complex, which will generate revenue during non-Hajj months.

Mawums Limited, a Ghanaian civil engineering and real estate firm, is developing the project in partnership with GACL, with an expected completion timeline of 24 months. President Mahama highlighted the project's alignment with the government's commitment to religious inclusivity and support for Ghana's diverse religious communities. The sod-cutting ceremony was attended by notable figures, including the Chief Imam, His Eminence Osman Nuhu Sharabutu, Muslim scholars, government officials, and representatives from the Hajj Task Force and various Muslim groups.
