Accra: The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, has commended Ghana for its successful debt restructuring efforts and reaching a pivotal agreement on the third review of its ongoing $3 billion loan-supported program. This development marks a significant step in Ghana's economic recovery, as the nation recently completed its Eurobond debt restructuring, surpassing international benchmarks. According to Ghana News Agency, Georgieva expressed her support for Ghana's recovery in a post on X, emphasizing the IMF's ongoing commitment to the country's financial resurgence. Ghana achieved a 98 percent exchange on its $13 billion Eurobond debt, well above the 65 percent benchmark set by international bondholders. The country now faces the task of finalizing debt reforms with bilateral commercial creditors, a process the IMF has urged the government to handle strategically. During a press briefing, the IMF African Director highlighted the importance of obtaining a favorabl e deal for Ghana in future negotiations. The recent external debt agreement is seen as crucial to achieving debt sustainability, targeting a debt-to-GDP ratio of 55 percent by 2028. Earlier this month, Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam noted the significance of the Eurobond restructuring in resolving Ghana's international bond default, marking a milestone in the nation's economic recovery. He reiterated the government's commitment to fiscal consolidation, emphasizing the need for improved domestic revenue mobilization and strict expenditure controls. In parallel with these efforts, Ghana's Finance Minister signed a $260 million agreement with the World Bank to reform the country's energy sector. The deal aims to address inefficiencies and attract further investments, including a $250 million credit metering procurement package and a $10 million clean cooking grant as part of the Bank's Program for Results initiative. The energy sector reforms are expected to significantly reduce Ghana's metering gap, enhance billing system integration, and improve revenue collection transparency. Dr. Amin Adam stated that these reforms align with Ghana's national development goals and are crucial for sustainable economic growth.
