Rimini:A Tunisian project focused on the recovery of organic waste through biochar, designed by young researcher Abdelhalim Latrach, has been distinguished for exhibition and promotion at the 29th International Green and Circular Economy Exhibition, Ecomondo, taking place from November 3-6, 2026, in Rimini, Italy.
According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse – English, the initiative, known as the Biochar for Water and Soil Resilience Initiative "TunChar," is part of a broader framework aimed at organic waste valorization, water resilience, and climate adaptation in Tunisia. The project was one of 41 scientific works presented in poster format, highlighting technological solutions for resource recovery in the Mediterranean.
Abdelhalim Latrach, the 32-year-old researcher behind the initiative, hails from Tataouine and holds a professional master's degree in waste management and recovery. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in physics. The TunChar project utilizes a pyrolysis process, which thermally treats organic residues in the absence of oxygen, transforming biomass into biochar, while minimizing carbon emissions.
The initial phase of the project targets the processing of over 40,000 tonnes of organic waste per year in Mahdia, Monastir, Sfax, and Sidi Bouzid, aiming to produce 12,000 tonnes of biochar, 16,000 tonnes of bio-oil, and 12,000 tonnes of syngas annually. The project addresses the need to improve soil quality amid water stress, offering biochar as a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizers. It also purifies wastewater and has a significant CO2 sequestration potential.
Looking ahead, Latrach plans to expand the model across Tunisia, seeking strategic partnerships with universities, incubators, and funding bodies.
