Jerandi calls for adopting new approach to irregular migration

(TAP) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad Othman Jerandi urged European countries and various humanitarian organisations to adopt a new approach to irregular migration from Sahel countries to Europe as this has a negative impact on transit countries, including Tunisia.

The minister said, as he met with European Union Special Representative (EUSR) for the Sahel Emanuela Claudia Del Re, this approach has to go beyond the security aspect in transit countries and centre around the principles of solidarity and equitable development between concerned countries, the ministry said on Friday.

This vision was advocated by President of the Republic Kais Saied on several occasions, the FM said.

The Foreign Minister also said there is need to pool European and African efforts to establish peace and security in the Sahel region.

It is necessary to make every effort, Jerandi added, to find comprehensive solutions to terrorism and address its root causes, including poverty, marginalisation and the lack of food security.

The EU Special Representative for the Sahel said consultations with Tunisia are underway to develop a common vision about irregular migration.

Emanuela Claudia Del Re is visiting Tunisia to attend the Regional Conference on Cross-Border Cooperation between Libya and the Sahel Countries held by the EU on November 22-23.

The special representative highlighted Tunisia’s key role in strengthening stability in the Sahel region “considering the great confidence it enjoys among the region’s countries.”

Tunisia, a member of the African Union Peace and Security Council (2022/2024), is able to contribute to regional efforts aimed to preserve peace and security in the African continent, she added.
