Accra: Members of Parliament (MPs) from both sides of the House during Friday's parliamentary sitting lauded the Black Stars' qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The chamber echoed with praise, pride, and called for national unity as lawmakers commended the team's resilience and determination.
According to Ghana News Agency, the legislators described the qualification as 'a proud moment for the nation' and 'a testament to the team's resilience and unity.' This followed a statement read on the floor of the House by Mr Ernest Henry Norgbey, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, commending the players, the technical staff, and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation for the yeoman's job in qualifying Ghana for its fifth World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
The MPs from both the Majority and Minority sides took turns to express their admiration for the team's performance. They highlighted the Black Stars' journey through the qualifiers, emphasizing the discipline, teamwork, and patriotic spirit that defined their campaign.
Some MPs called for increased investment in sports infrastructure and youth development, noting that the team's success should serve as a catalyst for broader national development in sports. The prevailing sentiment in the chamber was one of unity and national cohesion and the lawmakers urged Ghanaians to set aside political and ethnic differences and support the Black Stars wholeheartedly.
'This is a time to come together as one person, one nation, behind one team,' one MP declared. With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Parliament pledged its full support to the Ghana Football Association and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to ensure the team is adequately prepared. There were also calls for corporate Ghana to step up sponsorship and logistical support.
