NCCE Urges Students to Avoid Spreading Fake News as Elections Approach

Nalerigu: Mr Wilberforce Zangina, the North East Regional Director of the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE), has urged students to avoid creating and aiding the spread of fake news in the lead-up to the critical elections scheduled for December 7, 2024. He highlighted the significance of the elections due to the current hung Parliament and emphasized the need for peace during this politically charged period. According to Ghana News Agency, Zangina addressed the students at the Nalerigu Nursing and Midwifery Training College as part of the NCCE's phase-two sensitization of tertiary institutions. This initiative is supported by the European Union under the project 'Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism (PCVE)'. The program aims to enhance students' understanding of peacebuilding, social unity, and community-based strategies to counter violent extremism. The sensitization sessions provided students with insights on preventing violent extremism and terrorism, equipping them to become positive influencers within their communities. Zangina emphasized the risks associated with political violence, the influence of money in politics, and the dangers posed by misinformation and intolerance. Additionally, Deputy Superintendent of Police Robert Anabiik from the North East Regional Police Command addressed the implications of violent extremism. He highlighted the potential for loss of life, destruction of property, and social disruption, urging students to promote peace and employ non-violent methods for resolving conflicts. Anabiik stressed the importance of the youth's role in fostering a safer and more united society.
