Newly Commissioned Hohoe Market to Pioneer Night Trade in Volta Region.

Hohoe: Mr John-Peter Amewu, the Hohoe Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) and Railway Development Minister, announced that the newly commissioned Hohoe Central Market is set to introduce night trading, a first for the Volta Region. Speaking at the market’s inauguration, Amewu emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the area’s economic activities by installing lighting in all stores and sheds to facilitate nighttime commerce.

According to Ghana News Agency, the market’s launch was marked by Amewu’s assertion that the government has significantly contributed to the constituency and is dedicated to further developments. He urged traders to maintain the facility to extend its utility and called for accountability from the revenue mobilisation taskforce to support continued growth. Amewu also highlighted ongoing and future projects aimed at the constituency’s development, stressing the importance of compensating traditional authorities and landowners.

Mr Francis Fiakpui, the Hohoe Municipal Chief
Executive (MCE), noted that the market offers a dynamic platform for local vendors to exhibit their products, fostering economic growth and trade relations. The newly inaugurated market boasts 106 lockable stores, 146 sheds, and essential facilities including a warehouse, creche, and police, health, and fire posts. Fiakpui revealed that the project was funded by the World Bank under the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme (GSCSP) via the Local Government Ministry.

He added that the World Bank-funded Public Employment Centre, through the Employment and Labour Relations Ministry, will serve as a hub for employment-related matters, connecting job seekers with employers and regulating employment issues. Fiakpui encouraged regular payment of market tolls to help the Assembly generate revenue for market maintenance and essential services.

Togbega Gabusu VII, Paramount Chief of Gbi Traditional Area, expressed gratitude for the government’s developmental initiatives and commended Mr Amewu and the Hohoe Municip
al Assembly for their efforts. Madam Doris Amu, Queen of the Hohoe Market Women Association, conveyed appreciation on behalf of the Association and assured that the facility would be well-cared for.
