Ningbo Open: China’s Second City in Tennis Takes Center Stage with WTA 500 Event

Ningbo: The 2024 Ningbo Open, now a WTA 500 event, officially started, marking another milestone in Ningbo's sports history. The city's collaboration with the Women's Tennis Association, now in its second year, has elevated the tournament to new heights, showcasing Ningbo's commitment to international sports. According to Ghana News Agency, tennis has a significant following worldwide, with 87.18 million people playing the sport as of 2021. China is a major player, having the second-largest number of tennis enthusiasts and courts globally. Since the establishment of the first tennis court in Ningbo in 1987, the sport has seen substantial growth in the city. Ningbo now hosts events from the three major international tennis associations: WTA, ATP, and ITF. The inaugural Ningbo Open in 2023 was a pivotal event, filling a regional gap in the WTA tour and attracting 5.192 million viewers. Its upgrade to a WTA 500 event places Ningbo alongside global cities like Washington, D.C., Abu Dhabi, and Berlin, underscori ng its capability to host major international tournaments. The event not only highlights athletic excellence but also offers players a glimpse into Ningbo's rich cultural heritage. Participants like Jaqueline Cristian from Romania enjoyed local arts such as embroidery and stone carving, enhancing their experience beyond the tennis courts. Zheng Jie, vice president of the Chinese Tennis Association, emphasized Ningbo's growing reputation as a sports city capable of hosting top-tier events. By integrating sports with cultural and tourism sectors, Ningbo aims to transform event spectators into active participants in the city's diverse offerings. With a strategic focus on hosting high-profile international events, Ningbo is poised for further growth in its sports industry. The city is scheduled to host several other major sports events in the coming years, including the ISSF Shooting World Cup and the IWF World Championships, aligning with economic indicators that predict a boom in sports activities as per cap ita GDP increases.
